Figueroa Mountain Brewing Co. was founded by father and son team, Jim and Jaime Dietenhofer, in 2010. With a passion for craft beer, they set out to pay homage to the beautiful Santa Ynez Valley with handcrafted beer and hand-drawn artwork depicting the local landscape on their labels. There are currently four taprooms along the Central Coast of California. Figueroa Mountain Brewing Co. beer can be found in their taprooms or at select retailers and restaurants throughout California. We brewed this IPA with our great friends Matt Bryndilson (Brewmaster) and Dustin Kral (Head Brewer) of Firestone Walker. The idea was to use a grain known as Extra premium pilsner malt to achieve an extremely light color to truly allow the hops to shine. American hops such as Denali, Ekuanot, and Mosaic we're used to lay a base layer of Tropical citrus, stone fruit, berries, and pine, while Australian hops like Galaxy, and Vic Secret were used to add a tropical resinous punch to this unique IPA.

For our third Anniversary, we decided to take one of our oldest, tried-and-true recipes and turn it up to eleven. We doubled the malt and hop bills for our Stagecoach Oatmeal Stout, and then aged it in our local distiller, Ian Cutler's bourbon barrels. The result is the inkiest brew we've made to date: a pitch black vortex of no light in the glass with red-amber hues around the edges and a thick, pillowy tan head. The aroma barrels outward in all directions carrying luscious, freshly-ground cacao and espresso beans, tobacco fields and - of course - the unmistakable scent of heavily charred oak and vanilla-honey-brown sugar creaminess that is American bourbon. The mid-palate hits you with more of the same, plus a good wallop of baking spices and toasted black bread. The finish is off-dry and smooth, leaving a gentle warming tingle.

Tom Isaacson is an avid home brewer in the Santa Ynez Valley, and has been brewing for over 20 years. Our buddies at Valley Brewers held a competition that would highlight the use of Mandarina Bavaria hops. Tom created a wonderful Saison with accentuated juicy citrus notes coming from the usage of both the Saison yeast and the hops. Light amber in color, gentle notes of honey and toast accompany candied orange rind and other citrus notes in this strong Belgian Saison. The alcohol is 8.1%, but the yeast aroma and flavor mask its true nature. Bella Mia translates to “Beautiful Me” and was chosen to honor a family Bulldog that sadly passed away. True beauty is in the eyes of the beer-holder!

Brewed in collaboration with Island brewing from Carpenteria, Buddhankadonk utilizes two uncommon forms of citrus to help supplement great American hop character. Buddha’s hand is a citrus from South-East Asia which adds aromas and flavors of tropical lemons. Oddly shaped with strange tendril like appendages this citrus varietal is challenging to work with. It contains no edible flesh unlike other forms of citrus. In addition to Buddha’s Hand, we paired up with a citrus farmer in Santa Paula to use a Grapefruit/Pommelo hybrid known as Oros Blancos. It lends supplemental grapefruit aroma/flavor to help round out the citrus profile. Piney, Herbal, and citrus aromas come from Simcoe, Jarrylo, and El Dorado hops. The malt character is simple with subtle aromas of fresh bread and light toast. The beer clocks in at 7% ABV so be careful to not get too enlightened, you may end up on your buddhankadonk!

In a collaboration with Julian Shrago of Beachwood BBQ and Brewing, FigMtnBrew Santa Barbara has brewed a Dortmunder style lager. "Dort Knox" gold lager pays homage to the traditional style lagers of Dortmund Germany. Dortmund is a town in Eastern Germany. Their traditional Dortmunder lager is somewhere between a Pilsner and German style Oktoberfest. Julian and Kevin came together, knowing that they wanted to brew a lager. When several styles Julian recommended to brew were already part of FigMtnBrew's portfolio, we agreed to brew this uncommon style in an attempt to bring it back to life in America.

Stemming from their recent Fig Mtn Brew launch in Japan, Jaime and Kevin were inspired by the innovative minds of West Coast Brewing (WCB) of Shizuoka. So we teamed up with WCB and brewing legends Wild Fields to produce a super intricate rice lager, using cereal mashing techniques paired with the highest grade of short grain rice we could find. Spencer Middleton, a graduate from the BREN school of UCSB won a homebrew competition they threw about a year ago. As the winner spencer was offered a chance to brew his winning recipe at our Santa Barbara brew pub. Monsieur Spencoir is a twist on a traditional French Saison. Rather than using traditional noble hops, Spencer opted to use traditional American hop varietals Cascade and Centennial, which play well with the intense fruity character of the French Saison yeast. The beer is dry, fruity, and very drinkable.

The malts showcase hop character very well. Hops like Nugget and Simcoe lay a foundation with pine and grapefruit, while others like Hallertau Blanc, Cascade, and Citra lend to a blizzard of bright citrus and tropical character.
