5000 brews is a big deal for any brewery, so we decided to mark the occasion with a big time beer. For our 5000th brew, we decided to tackle the Belgian Strong Golden Ale (made popular by Duvel) - but with our own spin. We made it big (just a hair shy of 11%), got a little excitable with the hops (dry-hopped with Willamette, Vanguard and Calypso)... but we wanted to do more. So we filled up a couple fresh Orange Muscat barrels with the beer, aged it for a month, and then blended it back in to the primary batch (making it ~30% barrel-aged). We also added a barrel of our Hefe that we fermented with Fantome yeast because that’s what we do. The final blend is intensely friuted with a good amount of spice in the aroma. Flavor starts vaguely sweet with all those fruit notes from the nose on your tongue, and dries out in a nice warming burst of alcohol and spice.

Our next big SF Beer Week collaboration comes to us via our former brewer Collin McDonnell, now an owner/brewer/poobah emeritus at HenHouse Brewing in Petaluma. A few months back, he invited our crew up for a collab brew of a Belgian dark strong on his original small system to be barrel-aged in Four Roses bourbon barrels. Then a few weeks ago, the process continued with a second, fresh 15bbl brew of this beer, this time at Drake’s. The two brews were then blended together, and Bourbon Induced Fowl Play was laid. This beer is no grouse. It appoaches the style of Belgian dubbel, with a dominant malt character thanks to a generous helping of lark caramel malt, followed by a bit of cinnamon spiciness from the yeast. Then takes one last tern with a slight peck of bourbon from the barrel.

The 2009 version is an Imperial Brown modeled off an English Brown recipe. The color is a very rich maple brown that doesn’t seem to have red or orange highlights, just brown. The flavor is rich toffee with toasty notes underneath which should give a nice play between malty sweet and dry flavors in the mouth.
