Falls City Brewing Co. was formed in Louisville, Kentucky in 1905 when local tavern and grocery store owners began their own brewing operations as a way to break a local monopoly on beer production. After decades as a value brand, Falls City closed in 1978.
The brand was reborn as a craft beer in 2010. Today, Falls City Pale Ale, Hipster Repellant IPA, Kentucky Common and a full family of seasonals are available in bottles and on taps in stores and bars around the region. A variety of other small batch specialty beers are produced and available on draft at Over the 9, the restaurant and bar in the emerging Portland district just west of downtown Louisville, and other fine establishments throughout KY, IN and TN.

Before Prohibition 75% of Louisvillians were drinking this style of beer, which was invented in the Falls City. The grain bill is based loosely on that of Bourbon, so it includes barley, corn, and rye. This low-alcohol, lightly-hopped brew is meant to be drunk fresh and provide a clean, sessionable flavor for those looking to drink more than a few.

Hazy Hipster showcases the Idaho 7 hop, which is a secondary hop in Hipster Repellant IPA. Idaho 7 is a bright, citrusy hop with flavors of tropical fruit, tangerine, and stone fruit. A sticky, resinous pine character rounds out the fruitiness to still remind you of an old school IPA. The soft malt character of wheat and oats creates a soft base to let the hops shine.

A piney and citrusy hop character is balanced nicely by a caramel and toffee malt base. An extra dose of Citra hops is added for dry hopping to give this beer a character that will outlast any trend.

We took a traditional Berlinerweiss which is a German soured wheat beer and aged it in a Bourbon Barrel that had old 502’s Bourbon Barrel Red in it previously. Then we blended back the unfermented grape juice to sweeten it up and add another layer of flavor. Falls City brewed a berlinerwiess for the first time more than 100 years ago, we’re bringing it back!
