In 2002 Phin and Sara DeMink founded Southern Tier Brewing Company in Lakewood, New York with the vision of reviving the practice of small batch brewing to a region rich in brewing tradition. Following several expansions from 2009 through 2013 Southern Tier now ships over 105,000 barrels annually to 33 states to meet growing demand for Southern Tier’s diverse portfolio of innovative beers that embody the spirit of American craft brewing. In 2015 Southern Tier Distilling Company was formed to create innovative small batch spirits using unique local ingredients under a New York farm distilling license.

Of course, both coffee and beer have certain, shall we say ‘uplifting’ qualities. Combine the two is a natural progression. Our 2xStout is considered by many to be a perfect milk stout. We started with that in mind, and added espresso beans and lemon peels for a true Italian style pick-me-up. The result is a stout so black, so rich, so creamy, it’d be at home in a café along a cobblestone street in some neighborhood in Rome. Yet, it’s beer.

Fresh grated ginger & a bit of red pepper flakes add a spicy, somewhat hot flavor note. Ginger adds a nice pungent, floral aroma as a complement to the sweetness of the agave syrup, lime & malt backbone. Lime concentrate adds a mildly acidic & tart note that balances the Agave sweetness. It adds a new dimension of flavor & aroma. Organic Azul Raw Light Agave Nectar was added directly into the kettle at the start of the boil. Agave is comparable, though not identical, to honey. The lighter syrups undergo less heating & a more thorough filtration for a more mildly flavored product. We chose Cascade & Willamette hops because of their spicy, citrusy aroma & grapefruit notes. The sweetness of lime & agave pair nicely with these bright, floral hops. The slight spiciness of Cascade hops contrasts the lime concentrate. This beer blurs the lines between craft beer & cocktails.
